Nokia N97: Install a stock firmware or a custom firmware with JAF

Below we see how to install an original firmware or a custom firmware on a Nokia N97, it's obvious that with appropriate changes the procedure applies to other s60v5s.

Download everything you need:

JAF installation:

  • Install JAF (any errors during installation on Windows 7 are normal)
  • Do not install the Nokia Cable Driver proposed by JAF, responding negatively when prompted
  • Install the JAF drivers when asked
  • Setting the compatibility mode with Windows XP SP2 for the file OGM_JAF_PKEY_Emulator_v3.exe

JAF configuration:

  • Copy and replace the updated file jaf_nok4models.ini in the JAF installation directory (C:\Program Files\ODEON\JAF or C:\Program Files (x86)\ODEON\JAF)
  • Create the directory "C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-505\"
  • Copy the files of the stock firmware in the directory above created
  • If you want install a custom firmware you have to copy its files in the same directory above created and if asked you have to overwrite the ones of the stock firmware

Firmware installation:

  • Turn off the phone
  • Start JAF from OGM_JAF_PKEY_Emulator_v3.exe
  • Allow JAF to access at the private network (JAF will ask this only at first boot)
  • Click on "GO"
  • It will appear an error message, "Error: BOX DRIVER NOT INSTALLED", this is normal and you will only have to click on "OK"
  • In the Tab BB5 you have to select Manual Flash, Dead USB, Use INI
  • On clicking on Use INI will be shown a list of phones, you have to select RM-505
  • The icons MCU, PPM, CNT, APE Variant will become green
  • You have to connect the phone, that is turned off, at the computer with the usb cable and you have to press on the button "FLASH"
  • A Warning will tell you that the this operation is dangerous, you have to affirmatively answer the question and continue
  • Now you have to quickly press the power on button, the first time JAF will tell you that it isn't able to find the phone and then Windows will install the drivers needed to restore the phone in case of problems
  • Press again the "FLASH" button
  • The flash of the phone will start and when the new firmware installation will end then will be shown the written Done! and the phone will reboot
  • In case the phone will not automatically restart and will be locked in a white screen with wrote NOKIA, then you will only have to remove the battery, reinsert it again and turn on the phone

Before doing this operation you have to be sure that the battery is totally charged.

Would be a good thing doing this operation with a computer with a battery or attached at an UPS to avoiding problems at the phone in case of blackout.
