Motorola Droid 4: problem solving and phone optimization

The Motorola Droid 4 is the latest Android phone with a great qwerty keyboard and thanks to that is not going to die now. Usually are the most competent users to appreciate a physical keyboard on a phone and this is why the Motorola Droid 4 has attracted many developers that make it a mobile evergreen.

I love it and for correctly use it outsite the US i developed and published the Mentor's Rom that translates the stock rom in many languages and that unlocks it for any european sim, the gsm patch that unlocks the gsm on non stock rom and the Safestrap version without the splashscreen and that allows to install two roms in the real partitions of the phone.

Even if this is an US phone this is very common in the rest of the world thanks to usual sellers who made money on it by selling it to unsuspecting buyers with installed my rom illegally tampered or unscrupulous installing malfunctioning rom as older versions of CyanogenMod that impact negatively on the performance of the phone and on the battery drain.

It is just to unsuspecting and unfortunates buyers that this article is intended for because in recent weeks many of them have contacted me through the comments of the site and via email on how to understand if in the purchased phone was installed my rom, to know how to solve the problem of low volume and most of the time to ask why the fast battery drain.

Understand if in your phone is installed the Mentor's Rom is the simplest thing, the original operating system of this phone is only in English and Spanish, so if the purchased phone have the original OS Motorola in other languages it means that is installed my Mentor's Roma and in:

Settings -> About phone -> Build number

the rom's name should be:

Mentor's Rom - Multilanguage (9.8.20-72_VZW-18)

and not:

Multilanguage (9.8.20-72_VZW-18)

and to understand if the rom is updated you have to check in:

Settings -> About phone -> Build date

where you should find the date in international format:

Thu Jan 01 20:53:49 CST 2015

and not only the year:

2014

as happened to some buyers, so if the operating system of the phone is in a lenguage different from English and Spanish and in rom's name there is not "Mentor's Rom" this means that the rom has been tempered causing the phone instability. An other way to understand if is installed the Mentor's Rom is to check in the browser the presence of a locked bookmark direct to this site.

About the problem of the low volume there is nothing that we can do, the Motorola Droid 4 has a very delicate ear speaker and is probably damaged, the only solution would be to replace it.

About the problem of the fast battery drain of the Motorola Droid 4 this is caused by the Rom:

  • if is installed my Mentor's Rom then you have to update it at one of a new version of the 2015, versions in which i added the Fast Dormancy to extending the battery duration up to three days, for now the last available version is dated 23-01-2015
  • if is installed the CyanogenMod 4.4.4 the battery is usually to drain from 3 to 6 hours for a bug with the google services wakelock(*) that has been solved in versions later the 23-03-2015, in this way the battery life is up to 1 day

Considering, therefore, that anyone is using a Motorola Droid 4 outside the US are using my softwares then you should use the latest available versions, we see how to install and properly configure one of the two rom or both the rom, the first thing you need to:

to install the Mentor's Rom you have to:

  • download the latest version of the Mentor's Rom
  • extract the .rar archive
  • copy the .zip archive of the Mentor's Rom on the memory card or on the memory phone
  • start the phone in SafeStrap
  • select: Boot Options -> Stock Rom
  • from the install menu select the archive of the Mentor's Rom from the memory card or from the phone memory
  • start the installation

to install the CyanogenMod 11 you have to:

  • download the latest version of the CyanogenMod 11
  • build a modded ramdisk to install the CyanogenMod 11 in the Safe Rom Slot
  • download the latest version of the Patch cdma to gsm
  • download the gapps
  • copy the four .zip archives in the memory card or in the phone memory
  • start the phone in SafeStrap
  • select: Boot Options -> Safe Rom
  • change the file system of the partition Data in ext3
  • from the install menu select the four archives from the memory card or from the phone memory
  • install in this order:
    • CyanogenMod 11
    • ramdisk
    • Patch cdma to gsm
    • Gapps

It all looks very difficult but it is much easier to do than to say, also the fact that the bootloader of the Motorola Droid 4 is locked means that the phone can not be bricked.

If you install both rom you can choose which one to use from the Boot Options menu of SafeSt

Besides the CyanogenMod 11 it is also available the official CyanogenMod 12.1 but is still very immature.

Now you can enjoy your fabulous Motorola Droid 4.
